Cerne Abbas Village Hall does not hold a Music Licence. Nor does it does not play any music as a hall-sponsored activity. Certain people who hire the hall may play music to accompany their activity, eg Yoga or Keep fit and the occasional wedding may hire a DJ or similar. The hall has the usual annual licence from the Council to allow the performance of live and recorded music and other licensible activities.
Our view therefore is that we hire the hall and it is for hirers to ensure they have the necessary Music Licence if their music comes under any copyright provisions. Not all music does and it for the hirer, not the hall, to determine this and take the necessary action. For example, a DJ may have a Music Licence, but it is for the hirer to check this.
At present we do not have a provision in our Terms and Conditions on this topic, but we are minded to include one which firmly places the responsibility on the hirer to check on the position as regards a Music Licence if music is played.
what do other halls do?
