The management committees of village and community halls are responsible for health and safety in their halls. No longer will fire officers and local government inspectors come along and give you advice for free, now it is a ‘do-it yourself’ issue. Whilst much of this is based on common sense some help and guidance from people in the know never goes a miss.  Come along to our ‘BiteSize’ event “Safe and Healthy Halls!” to find out more about:

·         Calculating how many people you can safely have in your hall and comply with fire regulations and good practice

·         Some general guidelines on food hygiene and environmental health issues in the kitchen area

·         Understanding how the risk of fire can be reduced and how chances of survival in a fire can be increased

·         Carrying out a basic health and safety risk assessment

For more information on the aims, objectives and content of this event please visit the members area of our new village and community halls networking website at www.dorsethalls.net

[‘BiteSize’ events include a buffet lunch; three or four short participative sessions on relevant topics; tea, toilet and talk breaks between each session. We aim to make the most of your valuable time.]

Session 1: ‘Safety in Numbers!’

·         In this session we look at how the safe numbers limit is calculated for public places and consider various issues that this raises, especially in terms of means of escape and getting everyone out safely if the worst happens.

14.00

Session 2: ‘Sticky Fingers’

·         People who work in food preparation have to follow food hygiene principles and have a duty of care to those they are feeding. However, what of the hall trustees?  They too have a duty of care even though they are not preparing the food. What should you be looking out for in your kitchen?

Session 3: ‘Great Escape’

·         Having looked at getting people out of your hall in the event of a fire in session one we turn our attention to preventing the need for that to ever happen by looking at the common causes of fires and how they can be avoided and the risks of fire reduced.

16.00

Session 4: ‘Risky Business’

·         Hall trustees are obliged to carry out risk assessments to ensure their hall users are not at risk from unnecessary hazards. There is an accepted methodology for doing this and it need not be onerous. They key is to understand how to implement the process so we will run you through it.
