Like Water for Chocolate
Director Alfonso Arau, Spanish/English with English subtitles
Food is a love song in this film set at the time of the Mexican Revolution. Tita’s hopes of happiness with her beloved Pedro are scuppered by her domineering mother Elena, who has decided that her youngest daughter can stay at home and care for her until she dies instead of marrying. But Pedro so loves Tita and her cooking that he proposes to her older sister, so that he can continue to enjoy the food with the extended family. Tita weaves her magic to create food that enables all who eat to share her emotions. Through heartbreak, bereavement and reconciliation, the culinary spells continue through years and generations until the bitter-sweet ending celebrates enduring love.
