view Thu, 05/04/2018 - 19:15 - 22:00 DEMG - Nicholas Cope - Importance and History of Ancient Civilisations in Britain

His extensively illustrated presentation is based on many years of research for his book, 'The Knap of Howar and The Origins of Geometry'. The Knap of Howar is a remarkably well-preserved Neolithic 'dwelling' constructed about 3,500 BC on the remote Scottish island of Papa Westray, Orkney. Nicholas demonstrates that geometry informs the design of this 'crude' building and describes this within a symbolic context.

He has written extensively on the sea-bed's recovery since the establishment of a Marine Protected Area in 2008. 'The Paradoxal Compass' (2017), his most recent book, will feature at this year's Hay-on-Wye Literary Festival.
